The popular song by Liza Minnelli states that "Money makes the world go around", but more and more of the friends of Root and Branch Change are discovering that actually our beautiful nursery-grown garden plants can have an even greater impact - fueling an amazing virtuous circle, bringing benefits at multiple levels, and even saving lives.
The plants at our community nursery in Chesham, UK, are lovingly nurtured by volunteers. Nobody gets a salary or expenses - their reward comes from working with friends on a project that brings lasting beauty to gardens across the South East of England at the same time as generating funds for life saving initiatives in one of South Africa's forgotten townships; initiatives to rescue and care for infants, children and young people who've been abandoned, abused and neglected. Growing numbers of such children and now discovering hope and a future, funded in part at least from the proceeds of plants grown and sold to our incredible customers!
And when we have one of our regular plant sales, or nursery open days, visitors take away plants of superb quality. We specialise in mature, hardy perennials that will explode with colour year after year. A returning customer said today, "I am just amazed at the quality of the plants I bought three weeks ago. I know quality when I see it and have come to buy lots more"!
We are proud of our plants. We grown them with passion and love, and as we do so, we pray to the God who creates them that they will bring joy to those who buy them, and tangible expressions of love to those we serve over 9,000km away in Munsieville township near Johannesburg. It's just a little tiny bit of the answer to the prayer, "Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven".
If you are close to Chesham on Saturday 1 June, why not pop along to the grounds of St Mary's Church, HP5 1HY, to our biggest plant and craft fair of the year?
